Family California - 10 days: San Diego, Disneyland and Los Angeles
A 10-day itinerary, two stages, a thousand memories
When traveling to California with young children, it's tempting to want to see everything - San Francisco, the national parks, Highway 1, Las Vegas... But traveling with toddlers is a fast learning curve: fewer steps mean more happiness.
For this first family trip, we have deliberately chosen to focus on just two steps San Diego and Los Angeles, with Disneyland in between. No suitcases to unpack and repack every other day, no long journeys that exhaust the little ones, no overloaded schedules that turn vacations into marathons.
San Diego for its relaxed lifestyle, calm beaches and legendary zoo. Los Angeles for energy, legendary beaches and Californian culture. And Disneyland in the middle, like the cherry on the sundae - because there's no age limit for believing in magic.
We don't regret this choice of simplicity for a second. Our children have had time to really to live We had time to relax and enjoy each place, without the fatigue of constant travel. California 10 family days: San Diego (zoo, beaches), Disneyland, Los Angeles. 2 stages only = more happiness with young children. Winning simplicity, less fatigue, more memories!
💡 Flight tips - arriving in San Diego, departing from Los Angeles
Our number one logistical tip for this road trip: fly to San Diego and back from Los Angeles. Both airports are served from Montreal and Quebec City, and this combination means you don't have to make the trip between the two cities twice - which is easily 2-3 hours in California traffic. With young children in the car, every hour saved is a victory! You start your adventure directly in San Diego, work your way naturally up to Los Angeles as the days go by, and leave from there without ever turning back. Simple, logical and much more relaxing for the whole family.

Why choose California for a family vacation?
California is probably the ultimate family road trip destination in North America. This country-sized U.S. state is home to mythical beaches, spectacular national parks, vibrant cities and the world's biggest theme parks. With its impeccable infrastructure, enviable weather and culture of the family-friendly, California puts parents at ease and makes children's eyes sparkle with every mile.
Perfect weather for families
Southern California enjoys almost constant sunshine, with over 280 days of sunshine a year. Mild temperatures between 22°C and 30°C from April to October make this region one of the most pleasant in the world for family travel. No sweltering heat, no monsoons - just generous sunshine and blue skies that make every day of exploration perfect.
The ultimate family road trip
Highway 1 and California's major freeways are designed for road trips. Distances between San Diego, Los Angeles and major attractions are reasonable, signage is impeccable and rest areas are modern and well-equipped. Renting a car and setting off on a family adventure is not only easy, it's the best way to discover California at your own pace.
The kingdom of amusement parks
California is home to some of the world's most famous theme parks - Disneyland, Universal Studios, LEGOLAND, SeaWorld San Diego. For families with young children, this is an unbeatable argument. These parks are designed to cater for children of all ages, and offer magical experiences that young and old alike will remember for the rest of their lives.
Legendary beaches
From San Diego to Santa Barbara, the Californian coast offers iconic beaches with relatively calm waters, ideal for children. Coronado Beach, Venice Beach, Santa Monica - all mythical names that become real playgrounds for the whole family. Fine sand, gentle waves and lively boardwalks create an unforgettable summer atmosphere.
A reassuring, well-organized destination
The United States, and California in particular, offer all the infrastructure a family needs - hotels with family rooms, child-friendly restaurants, medical centers accessible everywhere and well-established tourist services. For families traveling internationally with young children for the first time, it's an ideally reassuring destination.
Where to stay during your stay in California?
Choosing accommodation is probably the most important decision on a family holiday - especially with young children. Here's our tried-and-tested strategy for maximizing each day without wasting time on unnecessary travel.
San Diego: 4 nights downtown
For San Diego, our advice is clear: sleep downtown. Downtown San Diego is one of the few American urban centers where everything can really be done on foot. The Gaslamp Quarter, the Embarcadero waterfront, Seaport Village and restaurants are all within walking distance of most downtown hotels. With young children, not having to take the car out for every trip is a priceless luxury - and an energy saver for the whole family. Four nights is more than enough time to explore San Diego thoroughly without feeling rushed.
Anaheim: 5 nights within walking distance of Disneyland
For the second part of our stay, we chose to settle in Anaheim, the city that hosts Disneyland, rather than Los Angeles. And it's clearly the best decision of the whole trip. By choosing a hotel within walking distance of the park entrance, you gain a huge advantage: get in early in the morning before the crowds, return to the hotel mid-day for the little ones’ nap, then leave in the evening when the crowds thin out. Over 5 nights, this pace easily allows you to’alternate days Disney, city tour, Disney, beach, Disney - without ever feeling out of breath.
Los Angeles: why we don't recommend sleeping there with young children
Los Angeles is a fascinating city. huge and totally scattered. Hollywood, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Venice Beach, Universal Studios - each attraction is in a different neighborhood, often within a 30-45 minute drive of each other, even without traffic. And LA traffic, with tired kids in the back seat, is an experience we'd rather limit! No matter where you sleep in Los Angeles, you'll be forced to take the car for every visit anyway. So you might as well stay based in Anaheim and make day trips to Los Angeles - you get the best of both cities without the logistical hassle of moving hotels in the middle of your trip.
Getting around California
In California, the answer is simple: the car. No hesitation, no alternative - the Golden State was built around the automobile, and it shows on every corner. Freeways are wide and well signposted, and parking is generally easy outside Los Angeles. Rent your car as soon as you arrive at the airport and enjoy the total freedom that only a California road trip can offer.
💡 Tip Book your rental car in advance on platforms like Rentalcars or Discovercars - prices can double if you wait until the last minute, especially in summer!
Family activities in San Diego

San Diego is an effortless city to discover - relaxed, sunny and perfectly calibrated for families with children. Here are the must-sees we tested and loved, plus a few options we didn't try but are worth a mention.
USS Midway - a life-size aircraft carrier
The USS Midway is one of San Diego's most impressive attractions. This World War II aircraft carrier, now transformed into a floating museum, welcomes families to its immense decks, where dozens of authentic military aircraft take pride of place. Children can climb into some of the cockpits, explore the crew cabins and understand life on board thanks to interactive audio guides. A perfect blend of history, adventure and wonder for the whole family - and parents are just as captivated as the little ones!
San Diego Zoo - the world's most beautiful zoo
If you had to do just one thing in San Diego, it would be the zoo. The San Diego Zoo is universally recognized as one of the finest and largest zoos in the world - and a visit here amply confirms that reputation. Over 3,500 animals of 650 different species live in natural habitats recreated with remarkable attention to detail. Giant pandas, koalas, gorillas and giraffes are among the park's stars. Plan to spend a full day here - you'll never get bored, and the kids will want to stay indefinitely!
Old Town San Diego - the historic village
Old Town is California's historic cradle - the state's first Spanish settlement, founded in 1769. This recreated historic village transports the whole family to 19th-century San Diego, with its period buildings, Mexican craft stores and restaurants serving authentic Tex-Mex cuisine. The atmosphere is colorful, lively and friendly - perfect for a half-day family stroll between two major tours. Kids love the historical demonstrations, and adults love the tacos!
La Jolla - the real postcard California
La Jolla is California exactly as you'd imagine it from a Hollywood movie. The coastal road that leads to this chic San Diego neighborhood runs along the Pacific Ocean between majestic palm trees and immaculate white houses - a dream setting that instantly gives you the impression of being in an American soap opera. But the real highlight of the show is to be found on the rocks of the beach. wild sea lions who bask in the sun just a few meters away from walkers, totally indifferent to the amazed visitors. Kids will go wild - seeing these huge animals up close, without cages or glass, is a magical, totally free experience that will stay with them long after they've returned home. An absolute must-see, even for the youngest!
SeaWorld and LEGOLAND - for those who want more
We didn't visit SeaWorld or LEGOLAND on this trip, having already enjoyed similar parks in Florida. But if it's your first time in California with young children, both are clearly worth a visit. SeaWorld San Diego impresses with its dolphin and orca shows, water rides and marine animal contact experiences. LEGOLAND, located in Carlsbad 45 minutes north of San Diego, is particularly recommended for children aged 2 to 12 - the giant LEGO blocks and gentle roller coasters are a hit with the little ones!
💡 To maximize your visits to San Diego, the Go City San Diego Pass covers the Zoo, the USS Midway, Safari Park, and about twenty other attractions in a single pass. For a family of 4 with 3-4 days of visits, the savings are substantial.
Disneyland - pure magic

Disneyland Anaheim is the original Disneyland - the one Walt Disney himself opened in 1955. Not the biggest, not the newest, but unquestionably the most full of history and emotion of all the Disney parks in the world. And you feel it as soon as you step through the gates of Main Street USA.
Two parks, infinite magic
The Anaheim complex actually comprises two separate parks:
- Disneyland Park - the original historical park with Cinderella Castle, Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion and the Star Wars Galaxy's Edge.
- Disney California Adventure - the neighbouring park dedicated to California, with attractions such as Cars, Toy Story, Avengers Campus and the spectacular Radiator Springs Racers
We have dedicated 3 full days to both parks - and honestly, we don't regret a single day. Three days is the ideal pace for seeing everything without ever feeling rushed, taking in the kids' favorite attractions and savoring every moment without running.
More human-scale than Florida
If you've ever visited Walt Disney World in Florida, you'll be pleasantly surprised by Disneyland Anaheim. The California park is much more compact and human-scale - No need for shuttles, monorails or a 20-minute walk between two attractions. It's all on foot, quick and easy. And best of all, when the kids are tired in the middle of the day, the hotel is just a short walk away. a few minutes' walk - easy return for a siesta, snack and energy recharge before heading out again in the evening to enjoy the illuminated park. A luxury impossible to replicate in Florida.
The Disney family rhythm tip
Our secret for surviving Disneyland with young children without ending up exhausted: enjoy an early morning, return to the hotel in the afternoon for a siesta, and come back in the evening. The first few hours after opening are the least crowded - you'll see twice as many attractions as in the middle of the day. In the evening, the park's illuminated atmosphere is absolutely enchanting, and queues shorten considerably.
Moments that leave a lasting impression on children
Disneyland is much more than just rides - it's a series of magical little moments that build up throughout the day. The meeting with Mickey Mouse that makes little ones' eyes sparkle, the afternoon parade down Main Street, the evening fireworks display with the illuminated castle as a backdrop, or simply your children's reaction to seeing the castle for the first time at the end of Main Street - these are moments that no photo ever really captures, but they remain engraved forever.
What to do in Los Angeles with your family

Los Angeles is a city that impresses as much as it intimidates. Huge, splintered and always on the move, LA can seem difficult to tame with children - but when you know where to go, it reserves some absolutely unforgettable moments. Here are our family favorites in the City of Angels.
Santa Monica and Venice Beach - the soul of LA
For as long as they'd been hearing about it - and especially since they'd seen it in GTA - Santa Monica was the place to be. the #1 stop the children were most looking forward to of the whole trip. And real life goes way beyond the video game! The famous Santa Monica Pier with its colorful rides, ocean Ferris wheel and food stalls creates a permanent carnival atmosphere that the kids love. Seeing this iconic pier in real life, which they recognized pixel by pixel, drove them absolutely crazy - the kind of moment when parents pull out the phone smiling and capture a reaction worth all the gold in the world. Just a few steps away, the Venice Beach boardwalk scrolls by with its street artists, basketball players, sand sculptors and bodybuilders - a lively spectacle, free of charge and totally unique in the world. Kids won't believe it, and parents won't either!
Hollywood - the real myth
Hollywood Boulevard is the epitome of the Californian myth. The Walk of Stars (Walk of Fame) fascinates children, who have fun finding the names of their heroes in the stars embedded in the sidewalk. The famous HOLLYWOOD in the hills, the Chinese Theatre with its star-studded handprints and the district's unique atmosphere make it a must-see - even if the area is less glamorous than you'd imagine, the magic still works!
Griffith Observatory - LA's most spectacular view
Perched high above Los Angeles, the Griffith Observatory offers the most breathtaking panorama of the city and the Pacific Ocean. The drive up through Griffith Park is an adventure in itself, and once at the top, the view of the LA skyline with the Hollywood sign in the background is one of the finest travel photos you'll bring back from California. Admission to the observatory is free, and the astronomy exhibits will captivate curious children.
Universal Studios - the park for movie fans
Universal Studios Hollywood is a must for families with older children. Harry Potter, Jurassic World, Minions attractions and life-size movie sets transform cinema into a total immersive experience. The studio streetcar tour, which passes through real Hollywood film sets, is a unique experience you won't find anywhere else. Allow a full day and buy your tickets online to avoid long lines.
👨👩👧👦 Honestly: Universal Studios was on our list, but with toddlers in our arms, we had to put it off! Most attractions require a minimum height of 102 cm, and it's best to have children of at least 6-7 years of age to really enjoy them. But we'll share the essentials with you - and if you want to know what we did instead, read on!
Malibu - the beach of the stars
Just 45 minutes north of Santa Monica, Malibu is the legendary beach of Hollywood stars. Its long stretches of golden sand, surf-perfect waves and cliff-top dream homes create a permanent movie set. Even without running into celebrities, a stroll along Zuma Beach or El Matador State Beach with the kids leaves a lasting impression - California in all its wild, luminous splendor.
Street food - an adventure in itself
Los Angeles is probably the street food capital of the world. Food trucks, open-air markets, authentic Mexican tacos, legendary burgers and colorful smoothie bowls - eating in LA is an adventure in itself. Kids love the ongoing festival aspect of markets like Grand Central Market downtown, and parents appreciate the endless diversity of world cuisines all in one place.
The surprise at Staples Center
And then there was the surprise - the one that's kept secret until the last moment, and which will remain forever engraved in the children's memories. Our kids played basketball in elementary school and they loved it - so when we found ourselves in Los Angeles, home of the Lakers, the idea was obvious. How could we not enjoy it?
💡 Logistics reminder Los Angeles is huge - plan ahead maximum 2-3 rides per day to avoid exhausting children in traffic jams. Leave early in the morning to avoid traffic and return mid-afternoon before rush hour.
💡 In Los Angeles, the Go City Los Angeles Pass grants access to Getty, Universal Studios, the Warner Bros. Tour, and more. Ideal for avoiding the purchase of individual tickets—and the activities budget becomes much more predictable.

Same sunny weather, same generous sunshine, but without the usual Florida spring break rush. A well-kept secret that families who have tried it out never regret!
❤️ San Diego - my American favorite
I'll end with a personal confession: San Diego is without hesitation my favorite city in all of America. And yet, it wasn't the one I was most looking forward to. But San Diego surprised, seduced and won me over at every turn. The beauty of the neighborhoods, the impeccable cleanliness, the flawless organization, the mildness of a near-perfect year-round climate and above all - the people. Relaxed, smiling, warm and with a genuine kindness that immediately puts the whole family at ease. San Diego is Los Angeles without the stress, California in all its splendor without the frenzy. It's a city on a human scale where you instantly feel at home, where children run freely on the beach in the morning and parents can really relax. If I were asked tomorrow to move to an American city without a second thought, it would be San Diego - without the slightest hesitation.
