El Tatio Geysers

The geyser field El Tatio is a geothermal site located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. It is one of the largest geyser complexes in the world and the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, renowned for its spectacular steam plumes at dawn and its spectacular Andean setting.

Key facts

  • Location: Antofagasta region, Chile
  • Altitude : Approximately 4,320 m above sea level
  • Number of geysers : More than 80 assets
  • Jet temperature : Approx. 85°C
  • Main access : From the town of San Pedro de Atacama

Geological context

El Tatio lies on a volcanic plateau bordered by the Andes mountain range. Geothermal activity results from contact between groundwater and rock heated by magma from surrounding volcanoes. This system produces geysers, fumaroles and bubbling pools rich in coloured minerals.

Observation and tourism

Visitors come early in the morning to observe the steam columns illuminated by sunrise, when the temperature difference amplifies the visual effects. Trails and platforms ensure a safe visit. The site is a major attraction in the San Pedro de Atacama region, despite the extreme cold and altitude conditions.

Scientific and environmental significance

El Tatio is a natural laboratory for geothermal energy and the study of extreme life. Its silica deposits and thermophilic micro-organisms serve as a model for understanding ancient hydrothermal environments on Earth and potentially on Mars. The site's conservation aims to preserve this fragile Andean ecosystem.
