Comuna 13: a neighborhood that tells its own story
Located west of Medellín, the Comuna 13 has become a global benchmark for street art and social transformation. Just 20 years ago, this neighborhood was infamous for the violence associated with armed groups and drug trafficking. Today, it is a symbol of resilience and creativity.
During our visit, we were struck by the color and vitality of the streets. Visit graffiti tell the story of the neighborhood: past violence, hope, education, music and solidarity. Some of the frescoes evoke local figures, community heroes or messages of unity. The children loved recognizing the drawings and posing for colorful photos.
One of the most emblematic symbols of Comuna 13 are its outdoor escalators, installed in the hills to link the different levels of the district. This system has transformed the daily lives of the residents and become a major tourist attraction. For us, it was fascinating to see how these simple installations reconnected the community and improved access to schools, shops and services.
During our visit, we also discovered a number of small local cafés and met warm-hearted locals who shared their stories and projects for young people. For a complete immersion experience, we chose a local guide who explained the historical context, anecdotes and significance of each fresco. The boys loved this lively, interactive approach, much more than a simple sightseeing tour.
