Traveling in the South with toddlers is often the first big question we ask ourselves as parents.<\/strong> Three destinations almost always come up in conversation: Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba. We\u2019ve visited them all as a family, at different ages and in different contexts. Here\u2019s our honest comparison\u2014from a real Quebec family that tested them out for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mexico (Riviera Maya) \u2014 Guaranteed wonder<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our trip: Christmas in Riviera Maya, children aged 2 and 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had chosen a hotel-zoo \u2014 yes, you read that right, a resort with animals roaming free in the gardens \u2014 and it was honestly the best choice we made. The kids were glued to the sights all week. Pink flamingos at breakfast, monkeys in the trees by the pool. It's hard to do better to spark a love for travel in a two-year-old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Riviera Maya also boasts fine white sand beaches, ultra-calm turquoise waters, and some of the best-equipped family resorts in the world. Kids' clubs, splash pools, continuous entertainment \u2013 the children are kept busy, and the parents can finally relax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The honest drawback:<\/strong> It's popular, so it's more expensive than the DR or Cuba, especially during the holidays. And with recent security events in some areas, it's advised to choose your sector carefully \u2014 stay in the marked tourist zone and you'll be perfectly fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For whom?<\/strong> Mexico is our number 1 recommendation for a First family trip<\/strong> with children under 5 years old. The family offer is incomparable, the quality is constant, and the children return transformed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dominican Republic (Puerto Plata) \u2014 Absolute Relaxation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our trip: Puerto Plata, children aged 1 and 3 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a one-year-old baby in our arms, we didn't need excitement \u2013 we needed rest<\/strong>. And the Dominican Republic gave us exactly that. An all-inclusive resort, a calm beach, warm service, and days that flowed without an agenda. It was precisely what we needed at that point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Puerto Plata is often overshadowed by Punta Cana, but that's what we like about it: fewer tourists, a more authentic atmosphere, and generally more affordable prices. The resorts there are well-equipped for families, and the staff has that endearing and joyful quality that immediately puts you at ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The honest drawback:<\/strong> There are fewer \u00abwow\u00bb activities outside the resort than in Mexico. If you're looking to go out and explore, you might be less satisfied. But if your goal is beach, pool, buffet, and good local food \u2013 you'll be in heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For whom?<\/strong> The DR is perfect for families with Toddlers (0-3 years)<\/strong> who want a relaxing trip without a hassle. More accessible budget, relaxed atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuba \u2014 Our favorite, once you know where you're going<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our travels: pregnant + 1-year-old child to teens aged 12 and 14. (6 trips)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuba is in a category of its own. And let's be direct: you either love Cuba or you hate it, and that almost entirely depends on Where are you going and what are you expecting?<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What won us over every time was the people. Cubans love children \u2014 truly, deeply, with a warmth you won't find anywhere else. Your 2-year-old toddler instantly becomes the star of the resort. The staff smiles, takes their time, and has fun with them. It's authentic, not rote service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The beaches are magnificent. The hotels, in the right areas, are superb. And the price? It's often cheaper than just the flight to other destinations. For a family that wants sun, sea, and incredible service without breaking the bank, Cuba checks all the boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The food isn't very varied, that's true. The quality can vary depending on the establishment. But when you choose your resort well and arrive with the right expectations, you leave delighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The significant downside in 2026:<\/strong> The situation in Cuba is difficult right now \u2014 shortages, power instability, a tense economic climate. It's not a destination we'd recommend for a First family trip<\/strong> Currently, especially with very young children. But for parents who know Cuba and know where to go, the experience remains incomparable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For whom?<\/strong> Families who have traveled before, are looking for exceptional value, and are charmed by people above all else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
